Why Asians value family and community
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPhbLdnk24z/?igsh=MXJ2b3lsbGh4MTJ4eA==
@hazard.one.actual on Instagram: "LKY on the importance of family and community to Asians. Asian societies, including Singapore, are collectivist, placing value on familial and community bonds more than individualism. This cultural focus puts the group's welfare first, promoting strong social connections and support among members. In contrast, Western societies typically highlight individual freedom and personal success, with community relationships and interests taking a backseat. The importance of community and family in Asian societies creates a strong support system promoting social stability and resilience. However, this can sometimes create challenges in balancing personal wishes with group expectations. Is your culture collectivist or individualist? Which do you prefer to live in? #singapore #lky #asia #china #individualism #collectivism #culture #singaporeculture #family #culturalvalues #collectivist #socialharmony"

Can culture be changed?— yes. through education

@hazard.one.actual on Instagram: "LKY on the possibility of changing engrained traditions and the unexpected soft power projection of doing so. In Singapore's early years of rapid urbanisation, public hygiene was a major concern. One habit highlighted was the traditional practice of spitting in public, which was once common across Asia. To reduce the spread of diseases like tuberculosis and to keep crowded areas clean, strict anti-spitting laws were introduced as part of Singapore's broader "Keep Singapore Clean" campaign launched in 1968. Today, spitting in public places such as streets, lifts, or buses is an offence under the Environmental Public Health Act. It carries a fine of up to SGD 1000 for first-time offenders, with repeat offences facing even larger penalties. This strict enforcement helped change social norms, making spitting in public a rare occurrence in modern Singapore. China took inspiration from Singapore's approach to public hygiene, including the crackdown on

Singapore’s domestic debate is for Singaporean

@hazard.one.actual on Instagram: "LKY in 1988 on the dangers of allowing foreigners to dictate how Singaporeans view their own society. He often warned that Singapore's political stability depended on Singaporeans, not outsiders, deciding the values and direction of their society. He believed that foreign media and imported ideologies, even if well-meaning, could easily disrupt the country's delicate balance by imposing frameworks that overlooked its unique context. Today, those concerns seem prescient. The rise of imported ideas like western-style identity politics has caused conflict when applied directly to Singapore's pragmatic, community-focused model. The government has also pointed to cases of foreign state-linked campaigns and media trying to influence local opinion as reasons to keep tight control over political discussions. However, in the digital age, the constant flow of information makes defending against such ideological influence much more complicated. Singapore no

How to deal with killer litter
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNXTh7ITj_r/?igsh=bnNuM3k5OWxoamxm
@hazard.one.actual on Instagram: "As the population of Singapore quickly shfited during the early decades from villages into public high rises, a new era of vertical living began. The risk of litter falling from above and striking people below became a serious issue. Singapore's approach towards encouraging pro-social behaviour often employ a stick-and-carrot approach. Campaigns to encourage desired behavior and curb antisocial ones are backed up by strict penalties and concrete attempts to enforce them, employing a blend of idealism and hard-headed pragmatism. How far should a government go when it comes to engineering desired behaviours? Several people were struck by objects thrown from flats and injured or killed. To curb such behaviour and instill civic responsibility, campaigns and harsh laws were passed in 1984. A person convicted of high rise littering could be struck with heavy fines, jail times, and also lose their flat. Singapore employs a stick and carrot approach towards
